Attention Market-Frankford Line [L] Riders Impacted by Service Delays on 3/25 & 3/26

Earlier this week, maintenance work on sections of the Market-Frankford Line [L] caused delays in two separate incidents. Both incidents involved a work car that was doing maintenance on our system. One caused rail damage, requiring emergency repairs. The other incident involved the breakdown of a work car on the track. Each incident resulted in service delays for our regular trains, exacerbated by communications issues for which we take full responsibility.

We recognize that these disruptions affect the lives of our customers and their trust in SEPTA's reliability. We are working hard to ensure that the issues that caused these types of disruptions will have a limited impact on our operations in the future. Our corrective actions include:

  • Immediate Inspection & Reporting - All managers operating work equipment are now required to immediately inspect any areas where traction issues occur and report them to the Control Center and their supervisors. This will allow for faster remediation and minimize service impacts.
  • Onboard Mechanical Support - A mechanic will now accompany the work car operating in a manner that could affect service. This will help address equipment issues in real time and prevent extended disruptions.
  • Preventative Maintenance Review - We are conducting a full review of our work car inspection and maintenance protocols to ensure reliability.
  • Enhanced Communication Protocols - We have reinforced expectations with our management team regarding immediate and proper communication of any operational issues. Timely reporting to our Control Center and supervisors will enable faster response and resolution.

The Engineering and Maintenance Team takes full responsibility for these incidents, and we apologize for the inconvenience these recent issues have caused. We know your time is valuable and we will continue to prioritize your safety and do our best to make our service more reliable and efficient.
