Stream Data Centers today joined ComEd and Elk Grove Village to mark the groundbreaking of ComEd's new substation, which will support the data center developer's third campus in Elk Grove Village, which is expected to begin benefiting customers in 2027.
"Northern Illinois offers the geographic and power advantages needed to meet our customers' demanding requirements," said Michael Lahoud, Co-Managing Partner at Stream Data Centers. "With ComEd and other local partners, we're proud to launch our third Chicago-area campus and deliver world-class hyperscale data centers that benefit customers and the community. This wouldn't be possible without the support, expertise and infrastructure of ComEd, who has been an exceptional partner throughout this process and has done a fantastic job navigating huge amounts of demand while reliably meeting mandates for all end users."
Following in the footsteps of Stream's Chicago I and Chicago II developments, this third hyperscale campus will feature over 1.2 million square feet across three buildings and will be one of the largest developments of its kind in Illinois. Now titled ORDC, the campus will offer configurable, high-efficiency hybrid cooling solutions, access to renewable energy options and ample connectivity and security to supplement the region's inherent advantages while enabling hyperscale customers to leverage the affordable, reliable power in the ComEd service territory.
"ComEd is proud to work with Stream to deliver the reliable electrical infrastructure needed to support their continued growth and investment in the region," said Neena Hemmady, vice president of projects and contracts for ComEd. "With best-in-class reliability, the ComEd grid will continue to play a pivotal role in achieving economic development goals for both the region and the state by providing the infrastructure to create more jobs and investments in our northern Illinois communities."
"This development represents a significant investment in our community's digital infrastructure," said Craig Johnson, Mayor of Elk Grove Village. "The new Stream data center campus will help foster innovation and economic growth while reinforcing our commitment to the tech community and the broader goal of fostering a welcoming business environment."
"At Stream, we actively seek opportunities that create lasting value for the communities where we build and operate - and this project in Elk Grove Village is a strong example of that commitment," noted Oisin O Murchu, Senior Vice President, Location Strategy & Development at Stream. "What made this project especially rewarding was the broad support from the community. The landowners were well-supported and achieved great transactional results, which was reflected in their vocal support throughout the public approval process. We're also grateful for the partnership of the Mayor and Village staff, who were incredibly supportive from start to finish."
With Stream continuing to develop world-class data center campuses in the region, this economic value can be further strengthened with the critical infrastructure required to meet evolving hyperscale demands for advanced workloads and operations. Engineering and design for this project began in 2023, and construction is currently underway. This project underscores ComEd's nation-leading reliability in northern Illinois and strengthens its reputation for clean energy access and competitive costs. The 260 MW substation project is expected to be ready for service in 2027.
ComEd is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), a Fortune 200 company and one of the nation's largest utility companies, serving more than 10.7 million electricity and natural gas customers. ComEd powers the lives of more than 4 million customers across northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state's population.
