The Goodyear Police Department has been awarded more than $84,000 in grant funding from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to strengthen traffic enforcement, impaired driving enforcement, and serious crash investigation efforts throughout the City of Goodyear.
The combined funding supports three key public safety programs focused on reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities as the city continues to grow and traffic volumes increase on local roadways.
Strengthening Traffic and Speed Enforcement
Through a $30,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant, the department will increase targeted enforcement focused on speeding, aggressive and reckless driving, street racing, school zone safety, and high-collision corridors. Grant funding will support overtime and employee-related expenses for officers conducting these enforcement efforts, as well as education and awareness campaigns.
The department has set measurable goals tied to the STEP grant, including reducing speeding-related crashes and serious injuries, and lowering fatal crashes by the end of 2026.
Enhancing DUI and Impaired Driving Enforcement
In addition, the department received a $50,000 impaired driving enforcement grant, funded through Federal Section 405(d) Impaired Driving funds. This grant will support high-visibility DUI enforcement efforts during holidays and special events when impaired driving incidents historically increase.
Grant-funded operations will coincide with major dates such as Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Halloween, and the Thanksgiving through New Year's holiday period. Officers participating in these efforts are certified in standardized field sobriety testing and horizontal gaze nystagmus detection.
"Impaired driving puts everyone at risk, and enforcement remains one of the most effective tools we have to prevent serious and deadly crashes," said Kyle Rogers, Goodyear Police Traffic Bureau Lieutenant.
Supporting Serious and Fatal Crash Investigations
The department also received a $4,300 grant to support traffic crash investigations involving fatal and serious injury collisions. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation-with more than 116,000 residents and major freeways including Interstate 10 and Loop 303-Goodyear has experienced increased traffic collisions in recent years.
This funding will support overtime and employee-related expenses for officers conducting detailed crash investigations and will allow the department to provide inter-agency assistance to neighboring jurisdictions when needed. The program also supports training and resources designed to improve the investigation and prosecution of serious traffic crashes statewide.
Together, these grants reinforce the Goodyear Police Department's ongoing commitment to roadway safety through proactive enforcement, education, and thorough investigation of serious crashes.
Funding for all three programs is provided by the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
