Speed data pilot project launches on Highway 5 North

KAMLOOPS -

Summary

  • A new system will gather vehicle speed data over sections of Highway 5 North between Kamloops and Avola
  • The data collected will help the Ministry of Transportation and Transit make informed decisions to improve safety

__________

A new system is ready to start collecting speed data along Highway 5 North as part of a pilot project to inform future safety improvements along the corridor.

How the system works

  • Cameras record vehicles passing at two points by reading images and text on licence plates, and creating a file with the time, date and location.
  • The system calculates the average speed between the two points and compares it to posted speed limits.
  • Data will be collected along the 33.2-kilometre section between Kamloops and Little Fort, and along the 41-kilometre section between Little Fort and Avola.

The data collected will provide more insight into driver speed and behaviour in the corridor, and help the ministry make informed decisions to improve safety.

Signs are posted to let drivers know when they are entering and leaving a data-collection zone.

Speed enforcement is the responsibility of law enforcement. Cameras are being used only for data collection.

Protecting your privacy

  • Licence plate numbers are masked or replaced with special characters.
  • All data is anonymized, stored securely, and deleted as soon as it is no longer needed.

The Province is investing in innovative technologies to improve the safety of all travellers on Highway 5 North.
