The Fall 2025 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades Rank Virginia Second Among States with 53.5 Percent of Virginia Hospitals Earning "A" Grades

RICHMOND, VA - Virginia hospitals have once again earned national accolades for excellence in patient safety and care in the form of recent news that the Commonwealth is ranked second overall among states in the Fall 2025 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade rankings.

Hospitals in Virginia have consistently been top performers in the bi-annual rankings. For the Fall 2025 period, 53.5 percent of Virginia hospitals evaluated by the Leapfrog Group received an "A" grade, which ranks second overall among states. Virginia previously ranked fifth overall in the Spring 2025 rankings and second in the Fall 2024, Spring 2024, Fall 2023, Fall 2022, and the Spring 2022 periods. The Commonwealth was first overall in the Fall 2021 rankings, fourth in Spring 2021, sixth in Fall 2020, third in Fall 2019, second in Spring 2019, third in Fall 2018, and fifth in Spring 2018.

"Delivering safe and effective treatment to our patients is a top priority for Virginia's hospitals," said Valley Health President and CEO Mark Nantz, the Chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association's (VHHA) Board of Directors. "Our dedicated teams of clinicians, caregivers, and support staff are invested in the work of providing compassionate care. This recognition from the Leapfrog Group celebrating Virginia hospital excellence in patient safety is a true credit to so many hospital staff members who reliably deliver safe care to people in the communities we serve."

Added VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton: "One of the hallmarks of the work of our Association is an unshakeable commitment from hospitals across the Commonwealth to collaborate and share insights and best practices on enhancing patient safety as part of our journey to make Virginia the healthiest state in the nation. Supporting hospitals in that work is a core principle for VHHA, which is why it is rewarding when national organizations like the Leapfrog Group affirm that Virginia hospitals and their teams are producing such positive results."

The Hospital Safety Grade program assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 general acute care hospitals across the nation based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Group, and other sources. In the latest rankings, 36 of 69 Virginia private general acute care hospitals evaluated received an "A" grade. The current "A" rated Virginia private acute care hospitals are listed below. Three Virginia hospitals on the list (denoted with an asterisk "*") are among an elite group of 11 hospitals across the nation that have earned straight "A" grades over multiple grading periods for more than a decade.
