President Karis discusses security cooperation and Rail Baltica with Latvian head of government

In Kadriorg today, President Alar Karis met with Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of Latvia to discuss cooperation between their two countries in boosting security, including in the field of drone defence, and in the construction of Rail Baltica.

During the meeting, the head of state and head of government underscored the closeness of relations between Estonia and Latvia and their importance to the security and well-being of both countries. They confirmed that they would continue to work together on bilateral issues and in strengthening regional security, with a focus on securing the eastern border and developing drone defence.

President Karis and Prime Minister Kulbergs also discussed matters pertaining to airBaltic and Rail Baltica and their strategic importance in ensuring the connectivity of the Baltic States. "Construction of the main line of Rail Baltica from Tallinn to the Latvian border is underway along more than half of the route," the Estonian head of state noted. "Our goal is for construction to be completed as soon as possible so that our people and businesses can benefit from this new connection and north-south mobility improves."

President Karis said he considered it important for the Baltic States to act as one to secure funding for the project in the next EU budget period.

Also discussed during the meeting was the impact of Russia's war of aggression on regional security, including recent drone incidents and the risks and impact of the Russian shadow fleet on both security and the environment.
