Southeast Missouri State University's (SEMO) Heartland Independent Winter Guard earned a gold medal in the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association Championships, an extraordinary milestone in its inaugural competitive season.
The 15-member ensemble performed the 2025 program, "The Bridge Between Us," at the Independent Regional A Classification. Throughout the season, the group competed in multiple events and won their class at every competition, leading up to their gold-medal performance at championships in Willard, Missouri.
"This championship is a result of our students' passion, discipline and drive to create something truly meaningful," said Dr. Jim Daughters, director of bands at SEMO. "The Heartland Guard's success in their first season is something we'll remember for a long time."
Tell me more about color guard
The Heartland Independent Winter Guard was founded this year as part of SEMO's expanding performing arts initiatives and operates under the umbrella of the University band program. In just one season, it has quickly become a standout ensemble in the region.
"The first competitive winter guard season at SEMO has been an incredible experience," said Luke Christisen, director of the Heartland Independent Winter Guard. "At the beginning of the season, I challenged the cast to lay a foundation of excellence and hard work for future members to follow, and they did just that. We couldn't be prouder of the team, and we can't wait for the bright future that color and winter guard have at SEMO."
Recruitment for the fall marching band season and color guard is already underway, and the Heartland Independent Winter Guard is looking ahead to another exciting competitive season next year.
