Portland State Ranked No. 1 in PNW for Social Mobility, Service Learning

Portland State University has earned top regional honors in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, securing the No. 1 spot in the Pacific Northwest for both Social Mobility and Service Learning.

The new rankings highlight PSU's role as a powerhouse for community engagement and economic opportunity, placing the university in the top 7% nationally for social mobility and among the nation's best institutions for service learning.

In the 2027 rankings, Portland State earned No. 31 nationally for Social Mobility, jumping 11 spots from No. 42 last year.

The U.S. News Top Performers on Social Mobility ranking focuses heavily on Pell Grant metrics, evaluating how effectively institutions enroll, retain and graduate economically disadvantaged students. PSU's ranking places it solidly in the top 10% of universities nationwide.

Portland State also placed No. 15 nationally and No. 1 in the Pacific Northwest for Service Learning, reinforcing the university's long-standing dedication to civic engagement and community-based education.

The Service Learning category is part of U.S. News' evaluation of special academic programs that research shows are directly linked to student success and positive learning outcomes. This ranking is also based on peer recommendation. In the spring and summer of 2026, U.S. News asked college presidents, provosts and deans to nominate up to 15 standout institutions across eight academic areas, including undergraduate research opportunities, first-year experiences and learning communities.
