Rhode Island Energy signs agreement to enhance gas capacity for customers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 15, 2025) - Rhode Island Energy (RIE) has signed an agreement with Algonquin Gas Transmission, LLC (AGT) expressing the company's commitment to contract for firm pipeline natural gas capacity as part of AGT's Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement (AGT Enhancement).

The AGT Enhancement is expected to be in service by the winter of 2029 and will provide incremental access to domestic natural gas supplies, enabling RIE to offer natural gas customers across Rhode Island a more reliable, diverse, and affordable gas supply portfolio. The project would also allow RIE to reduce its reliance on imported liquefied natural gas by providing access to domestic sources of gas supply. RIE is proposing to contract about 30 percent of the project's capacity.

"As we look to address the issue of affordability in our state, we believe an 'all of the above' holistic approach to energy resources provides the most significant benefit to our customers," said RIE President Greg Cornett. "Increasing the availability of supply for our existing natural gas customers, and those who wish to connect to our gas delivery system, is just one of the many ways we are working to meet growing demand, improve reliability and reduce costs."

In addition, the company's contract for the AGT Enhancement capacity is a significant addition to the RIE resource portfolio and augments the company's existing contracts and assets, increasing reliability of service to natural gas customers across the state, including those on Aquidneck Island.

The significant benefits provided by the AGT Enhancement require minimal pipeline facilities or construction activity and will be achieved through targeted enhancements to the existing AGT pipeline system, rather than through the construction of a new pipeline.

RIE will continue to develop and manage a gas supply portfolio that supports safe, reliable, and affordable service, as well as choice, for its customers - adapting to changes associated with market dynamics, regulatory initiatives, and policy changes.
