Flash Flooding and Severe Thunderstorm Potential

Stamford's Office of Public Safety has been notified of the potential for flash flooding in our area later this afternoon. Our partners at the National Weather Service have issued a Flash Flooding & Severe Thunderstorm notice, a Flood Watch, and a Heat Advisory for the Stamford area and surrounding towns. With deadly flooding in recent headlines, flood safety is top of mind for all of us.

Forecasted Conditions:

  • Showers and thunderstorms along a slow moving cold front this afternoon and evening may produce torrential downpours, which may lead to flash flooding.
  • A flood watch is in effect for the entire area from 2 pm this afternoon until 2 am Wednesday.
  • A few thunderstorms could be severe this afternoon and evening with damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph.
  • A heat advisory is now in effect for our entire area except the south fork of Long Island from 10 am until 8 pm. Max heat indices in the upper 90s to around 100 degrees are expected.

Preparedness Actions:

  • Never drive on flooded or barricaded roads-TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN!
  • If you live in a low-lying area, or an area prone to flooding, prepare to see typical or worse flood conditions.
  • If you are in a basement, prepare to move to a higher floor during periods of heavy rain.
  • Register for CTAlerts at: https://portal.ct.gov/ctalert/common-elements/common-elements/sign-up-for-ct-alerts
  • Have multiple ways to get weather information (local news and radio stations, NOAA weather radios, National Weather Service, emergency alert notifications, etc.)
