Physical Fitness Screening Evaluation - Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU)

Special Operations Technical Collection Operator (SOTCO)candidates must meet CANSOFCOM Physical Fitness Screening Evaluation (PFSE)standards administered by Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS)human performance personnel. These evaluations are designed to assess the physical readiness required for special operations employment.

The PFSE for SOTCO consists of:

  • Relative Hand Grip ≥ 1.00;
  • Standard Load Squat (72 kg), ≥11 reps;
  • Pull-ups, ≥ 5 reps, continuous;
  • Sit-ups, ≥ 40 reps, 1-min;
  • 20m shuttle run, ≥ Level 8.0; and
  • BMSS Test completion.

Candidates are expected to meet these standards prior to selection, as special operations training builds upon an already high level of physical fitness.

Official physical fitness preparation programs and resources can be found on the CFMWS website or through local CFMWS personnel. These programs are designed to help candidates train safely and effectively while reducing the risk of injury.

The Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU)is a highly specialized unit within Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM). It provides critical counter-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN)and full-spectrum exploitation effects for the Government of Canada (GC)by collecting, extracting and analyzing materials to identify threat origins and relationships. In Canada, the unit works closely with Whole of Government partners such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)including force generating the military component of the RCMP-led National Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE)Response Team. Internationally, CJIRU provides rapid and agile support to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)operations, often deploying on short notice to enable special operations forces (SOF)to operate safely in complex environments.

CJIRU's origins trace back to 2002, when the GC established the Joint Nuclear Biological Chemical Defence Company (JNBCDCoy) in response to post-9/11 security concerns. The company supported national CBRN capabilities and later integrated with Joint Task Force 2and the Immediate Response Task Force. In 2006, it was brought under CANSOFCOM and re-designated as CJIRU, adopting rigorous selection and training standards.

With recent shifts in the global and domestic operational landscape, CJIRU adopted a broader, intelligence-driven approach using advanced technical disciplines. As a result, CBRN Operators were officially redefined as Special Operations Technical Collection Operators (SOTCOs)in fall 2024to more effectively reflect their ability to attribute and characterize adversary actions in any operating environment. The transformation also played a crucial role in reshaping perception of CJIRU's mission, aiming to inspire interest among CAF members who are eager to contribute to Canada's defense and security.

Employment at CJIRU

Based in Trenton, Ontario, CJIRU brings cutting-edge technology to the forward edge of the battlespace. Highly trained SOTCOs and SOF professionals utilize advanced analytical tools to drive operational and strategic decision making within complex special operations. Its personnel represent the CAF's highest level of technical exploitation proficiency.

As a key employment opportunity within CANSOFCOM, SOTCOs are subject-matter experts who integrate seamlessly with SOF and national security partners and are directly employed in high-value tasks. They support a range of missions, including:

  • Technical Collection and Exploitation
  • Counter-CBRN operations including force protection tasks
  • Technical Reconnaissance and CBRNE Surveillance

SOTCOs deploy globally on short notice and maintain a high state of readiness through continuous training, research and collaboration with defence scientists and industry. SOTCO candidates must also meet CANSOFCOM Physical Fitness Screening Evaluation standards (you are now leaving the Government of Canada website). These programs are designed to help candidates train safely and effectively while reducing the risk of injury.

CJIRU offers CAF members the opportunity to contribute to national security at home and abroad through technically demanding SOF Professional employment as a Supporter, a Specialist, or as a SOTCO.
