Meet Ben: Children's Miracle Network Hero

Wednesday, March 04, 2026

Eight-year-old Ben Appleman's journey with type 1 diabetes began in February of 2022, when he went to school with a slight cold. He wasn't acting like his usual, energetic self, so he went back home in Melrose to get some needed rest. However, his condition rapidly worsened, and he was rushed to a local emergency room where tests revealed his blood sugar was over 560, indicating diabetic ketoacidosis. Ben was soon transferred to Emplify Health by Gundersen where he spent six days stabilizing and beginning his journey with a chronic condition.

Over the past three years, Ben has faced numerous challenges, but he's looked at each one as an opportunity to learn. He has experienced several episodes of ketoacidosis, which, while difficult, have only strengthened his resolve and independence. Today, Ben can change his Dexcom and insulin pump sites on his own and administer insulin shots when necessary. His parents, Bryce and Molly, have been instrumental in his journey, ensuring he stays on top of his diabetic devices and providing emotional support.

Children's Miracle Network® (CMN) has also been a significant source of support for Ben and his family. They have provided grants to help with medical supplies and fund his annual diabetic camp, where he connects with others facing similar challenges. These camps have not only offered essential medical education but also a sense of community and belonging.

"Any money donated to Children's Miracle Network is really going right to kids in our community," says Molly. "Even if it's a small amount, it is still so impactful to the families who benefit from CMN."

Beyond his medical journey, Ben is an energetic, caring and kind individual with a wide range of interests. He enjoys the outdoors and playing video games. He loves sports, particularly football and soccer, and is a devoted fan of the Packers and Brewers. Ben also enjoys cooking and aspires to become a DNR warden when he grows up.

Ben continues to inspire those around him with his positive attitude and determination to live life to the fullest, embracing each day with hope and resilience.
