JSR Collaborates with IBM to Enhance Development o f Semiconductor Materials with AI Materials Innovation for a richer world

JSR Corporation (Representative Director, CEO, President and Chief Executive Officer: Tetsuro Hori; hereinafter "JSR") and IBM announces that it has agreed to launch a joint research program on AI specializing in the chemical industry.

Based on this agreement, JSR and IBM will build a platform for the integrated operation of various materials systems by expanding the basic model specialized for materials development and developing a data utilization platform by utilizing generative AI* and other technologies. JSR and IBM Also plan to conduct joint research to build knowledge to understand and model a wide variety of material expressions. In addition to improving our competitive advantage, this program will also pursue disruptive changes in our R&D methods.

Recent advances in semiconductor technology and the accompanying advances in AI have already stimulated our daily lifestyles and changed people's behavior. The speed of this change is expected to accelerate further, and it is also affecting the development site of semiconductor materials.

For a quarter of a century, JSR and IBM have been conducting various joint research including AI research, and as a result, have contributed to the development of the global semiconductor industry.

Takeshi Fukuda, Director of IBM Research - Tokyo said, "We are excited to build on our long history of collaboration with JSR. Combining JSR's decades of expertise and ingenuity in materials science and IBM's AI expertise and insights, we aim to unlock new discoveries and accelerate the development of next-generation materials."

Toru Kimura, Senior Executive Officer in charge of the Electronic Materials Business and Next-Generation Research said, "The fusion of digital technology and materials science is a great opportunity to create unprecedented value."

With the advent of new technologies and the acceleration of the digital age, JSR is at the forefront of a new era of technological and social advancements with IBM. JSR's material innovations in semiconductors form the backbone of industries from energy to life sciences, seamlessly integrating into everyday life and creating a connected world.

* A foundational model is a type of AI model that has been trained on a wide range of data that has not been categorized or explained in any particular way, allowing it to perform a variety of tasks or apply information from one situation to another. Over the past few years, these models have made significant advances in the field of natural language processing (NLP) technology. IBM has been a pioneer in applying the underlying model beyond language, extending it to areas such as chemistry, time series data, geospatial data, biomedical, and digital care.
