Rescinding temporary fish-protection order for Salmon River

The Province has rescinded the temporary fish-protection order for the Salmon River watershed, as farmers and ranchers deal with elevated wildfire risk in the region.

"Earlier this week, I visited the Thompson Okanagan and the Salmon River watershed, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by wildfires and evacuations," said Randene Neill, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship. "This temporary protection order was put in place to protect Chinook salmon during extremely challenging drought conditions, but I have also heard clearly from farmers and ranchers about the significant effects these restrictions are having at a time that they are also dealing with wildfire risk. Because of this, I've made the decision to rescind the order, effective immediately."

Streamflows remain low, and the Province encourages all water users to continue voluntary conservation measures, including reducing irrigation where feasible, so that water remains available to support firefighting efforts and protect lives, property and critical agricultural assets.

The order was issued on July 28, 2026, under the Water Sustainability Act to protect Chinook salmon during a period of severe drought and critically low streamflows. Conditions in the watershed remain dry, and protecting fish populations continues to be a priority. Affected licence holders may resume authorized water use in accordance with the conditions of their licences. Provincial staff will continue to monitor streamflows, fish populations and wildfire conditions, and will work with water users to encourage conservation.

Provincial staff will continue assessing conditions throughout the season and will take further action as required to protect public safety, fish populations and water security.

Supports for farmers

Programs are in place to offer support for crop failure owing to drought, income declines and increased costs. Ministry of Agriculture and Food staff are available to help producers with their questions or claims. The Province has invested $120 million into the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program since 2023. The program supports more than 700 projects for farmers and ranchers, and will result in new or improved water storage and supply systems for irrigation and livestock in water-scarce and drought-prone areas.
