City of Greensboro Successfully Concludes Emergency Rental Assistance Program

The City's Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HND) successfully completed its Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) this fall. Funded by U.S. Department of the Treasury, the program started as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic's financial impact on renters.

Since the program's inception in 2021, the City awarded and expended over $19 million of federal funds to 3,313 Greensboro households, ensuring residents remained safely housed during an unprecedented time of need. With the program's help, tenants who fell on hard times were able to avoid pitfalls like credit score decreases or eviction by receiving assistance with rent and/or utility payments.

All program funds were successfully allocated and awarded through the diligent work of HND staff and program manager Elizabeth Danley.

"It was an honor and privilege to know that as a team, we were a small part of a larger community effort to keep families safe during the pandemic," said Danley, supportive housing analyst. "While it's a huge accomplishment to see a program from start to finish and be successful, there's still a large percentage of families in our community struggling to keep a roof over their heads."

In November 2024, the City forged a partnership with Legal Aid of North Carolina. The partnership allowed for extended eviction clinic hours, from two to four days a week, expanding the reach of ERAP services. Eviction clinics will remain in operation for expanded hours at the Guilford County Courthouse in Greensboro at 9 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and 1 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
