OSUIT prepares for Land-Grant Week celebration

Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology is getting ready to celebrate its legacy with Land-Grant Week, a series of events running from Monday to Thursday. The week is designed to involve students, faculty and staff in the core mission of the university.

As a land-grant university, OSU is committed to preparing students for careers, creating practical innovations, and addressing society's most pressing issues.

What is Land-Grant?

The Land-Grant university tradition began with the Morrill Act of 1862. The act's purpose was to "promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life." These institutions were created to powerfully impact society through teaching, research and Extension.

Today, land-grant universities are distinct from other higher education institutions. They instill individual leadership in pursuit of the common good and nurture career competence to cultivate communities. The land-grants also stand as economic development engines for the people they serve. For OSU, this means meeting Oklahoma's workforce needs, linking research to critical sectors of the state's economy, and making communities better through Extension.

This special week at OSUIT highlights the university's commitment to providing accessible, practical and high-quality education.

Land-Grant Week Events

Land-Grant Week is full of activities to celebrate what it means to be a Cowboy. Students who attend three or more events and share their experience on social media by tagging @OSUIT or using #WeAreLandGrant will get a free Land-Grant Week T-shirt.

All Week

Land-Grant Week Scavenger Hunt: Keep your eyes open across campus for an Orange Oklahoma hidden outside or in common areas. When you find one, bring it to the Dean of Students office in the Student Union (across from the Bookstore) to trade it in for a free Land-Grant Week T-shirt.

How it works:

• Open to OSUIT students only.
• One (1) T-shirt per student, first-come, first-served while supplies last.
• Orange Oklahomas will be easy to spot - no digging, moving or blocking walkways required.
• You must turn in the Orange Oklahoma and sign the winners list to receive your shirt.

"We Are Land-Grant" Banner: Stop by the Student Union to sign the "We Are Land-Grant" banner.

Monday, Sept. 22

• Breakfast with SGA: Get your day started with free donuts and drinks from 7-9 a.m. in the Student Union.
• Photo Booth and Soda Bar: From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., visit the Transportation Building Lobby for a free soda bar and a chance to take a #WeAreLandGrant selfie.

Tuesday, Sept. 23

• Punch n' Cookies!: Join the School of Engineering and Construction Technologies for free punch and cookies in the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Movie Night: Join Women in Industry at 7 p.m. at the Culinary Arts Outdoor Kitchen for a screening of "The Outsiders." Free movie snacks will be provided, so bring your blankets, pillows and chairs.

Wednesday, Sept. 24

• Library Make & Take: Visit the library throughout the day for a custom pen bar and the opportunity to make your own Land-Grant Week button. There will also be multiple giveaways.

Thursday, Sept. 25

• Cookout: Join STASH for a free hot dog bar from noon-1:30 p.m. on the Culinary Arts Patio. Enjoy yard games like cornhole, horseshoes and Can Jam, with music by DJ R-DVB.
• Intramural Flag Football Championship: Head to the Sports Field at 5:30 p.m. to cheer on the intramural flag football teams as they compete for the championship title. Bring your blankets, pillows and chairs.
