Statement: Statement on Advocacy

Apr 28, 2025

UChicago speaks with a distinctive voice, drawing on a rich history of academic rigor and enduring values of free inquiry and expression. The University has a long-standing practice of not joining collective statements written by others. President Paul Alivisatos communicated through messages to the University community in February, in March, and on April 25, about the substantive work that he and many others at the University are engaged in to address the political contestation of the future of U.S. higher education, both at UChicago and across the interdependent network of universities. These actions include advocacy, legal action, and reforms in service of advancing research, education, and the University's values. While the University's advocacy may not always be visible, it is ongoing. The University continues to work through multiple avenues to counter actions that could adversely affect the University's mission and higher education as a whole, including regular collaboration with other institutions and associations that share our interests.
