The City of Greensboro is launching a new tenant-based rental assistance program to help residents access safe, stable housing. Funded through the American Rescue Plan's HOME Investment Partnerships Program and Nussbaum Housing Partnership funds, the initiative will provide rental assistance to low-income households.
Approved by City Council at its March 17 meeting, the program will officially launch Monday, June 1, and run until the fall of 2030. The City partners with Greensboro Housing Authority (GHA) to administer more than $1.6 million in assistance to households earning 30% or less of the area's median income.
"This initiative strengthens our community's response to homelessness by providing flexible rental assistance and partnering with local providers to ensure households receive the support they need to achieve stability," said GHA Chief Executive Officer James Cox.
Assistance will be provided to eligible individuals and families currently on the Continuum of Care rapid re-housing waitlist, as well as those referred by partnering agencies, with all referrals coordinated by GHA. Priority will be given to those experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence. Eligible households may receive assistance for up to 24 months.
"This program will help reduce the waitlist in our community for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness," said Greensboro Supportive Housing Analyst Charles Gray. "Together, with our ongoing work to expand affordable housing, it reflects the City's commitment to providing safe, secure, and dignified housing options for residents who need it most."
The new program directly supports people at risk of homelessness by offering tenant-centered aid. Visit www.greensboro-nc.gov/HousingGSO to learn more about the City's plans to invest in attainable housing for residents.
