Division of Public Utilities and Carriers approves Rhode Island Energy proposal for bill credits; Company reiterates continued support for customers during the coldest winter months

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 10, 2025) - Rhode Island Energy is pleased to note that the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers today approved a settlement agreement reached with the Division's Advocacy Section this summer to bring substantial bill credits for Rhode Island customers.

This action will, if approved by the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission, provide electric customers a credit between $20-$30 per month, and gas customers a credit between $40-$50 per month in January, February, and March of 2026 and 2027.

Funding for these credits originates from a commitment made by Rhode Island Energy's parent company, PPL, to make adjustments to rate filings over several decades, resulting in small rate reductions in each filing. To make a more immediate impact, under the approved agreement, bill credits would go to customers during the peak winter months in 2026 and 2027, providing support when customers need it most.

"I am immensely proud of the work our employees, including our partners at our parent company, PPL Corp., have done to champion accelerated bill credits, but we know there is still work to be done," said Greg Cornett, President of Rhode Island Energy. "I also appreciate the assistance from the Governor's administration on these efforts, and I join Governor McKee in my hope that the PUC will swiftly approve the proposed bill credits, which we negotiated at arm's length over many months with the Advocacy Section of the Division and which have today been approved by the Division."

In addition to these potential bill credits, Rhode Island Energy will also administer an additional $5 million from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, provided by Governor McKee's administration, that will provide additional bill credits for income-eligible households later this year to help families stay ahead of their energy bills as the colder months of winter set in.

On top of this, Rhode Island Energy has developed a new, employee-funded assistance program designed to help support its most vulnerable customers this winter. This fund, named Operation Help, will be available to provide winter bill assistance to Rhode Islanders who need it most later this year. Rhode Island Energy will also continue its support for the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, which also provides heating assistance across the Ocean State.

"As fellow Rhode Islanders who live and work in the Ocean State, we at Rhode Island Energy understand the burden that energy costs pose to our customers, especially during the coldest months of winter," added Cornett. "There is much about the energy landscape in the state that we cannot control, but we have been taking steps where we can and exploring many options to help reduce costs this winter and next. We are especially proud of our employee-funded Operation Help, giving back to our friends and neighbors who need it most this winter. "
