Beyond the visible with UW-Oshkosh alumnus Josh Cavender

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh alumnus Josh Cavender '24, a reporter with WLUK-TV, credits his professors and the top-tier radio TV film program for helping him excel in the news industry.

Note: UW-Oshkosh graduate student Harshita Kaur reflects on her conversation with Josh Cavender, a professional journalist who graduated in 2024 with with a bachelor's degree in radio TV film.

Josh Cavender's professional arc crystallizes a more fundamental question: What becomes possible when education does not merely prepare students for futures already within view, but reconstitutes the horizon from which a future can be imagined?

Optimistic, predominantly, about film and production at a moment in fall 2020. He arrived at the University of Wisconsin -Oshkosh, a moment when the physical environments essential to both had been radically constrained. The pandemic-imposed distance on a discipline whose creative and technical formation ordinarily depended upon proximity. Yet even within that separation, the conditions for emergence endured.

Josh Cavender '24, right, broadcasts a football game from the press box at Titan Stadium, during his time as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Faculty preserved continuity; returning access restored encounter; coursework widened the field of experience; and production environments converted abstraction into practice. Within that reemerging space, news-initially peripheral to Cavender's ambitions-began to nurture another dimension of his creative orientation.

That distinction is fundamental: Cavender's development was neither the execution of a predetermined trajectory nor the substitution of one interest for another. It was a process of differentiation: an existing creative orientation encountering another form, testing itself within it and discovering capacities that could not have been visible at the outset.

What began as an assignment gradually became something more consequential. Repeated exposure developed into fluency and fluency into responsibility, as Cavender's judgment began to matter beyond his own formation.

By the time he entered a professional newsroom, the medium he had first encountered through coursework no longer felt unfamiliar. The cameras, editing systems, production rhythms and architecture of a broadcast belonged to a different institutional environment, but their underlying grammar was recognizable.

What began as a curricular assignment had matured into transferable capability. Graduation might conventionally have marked the culmination of that formation.

For Cavender, it became another point of departure; Potential was realized beyond the environment in which it had been formed. It moved outward-from university production into professional journalism and from professional journalism into the informational life of a community.

What Cavender had first encountered as an assignment, then developed through sustained practice, is now a significant consequence beyond the university.

However, departure did not become severance; The mentorship that shaped Cavender's formation at UW-Oshkosh has endured beyond graduation, drawing him back to the professors and program that first expanded the contours of his professional imagination.

But return carries a different significance now. Cavender comes back with what could not have been given to him then: the perspective earned by inhabiting the profession he was still learning to imagine.

Possibility, once realized, disperses beyond the horizon that first contained it.
