Akridge Congratulates Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream on Earning ULI Washington’s Juror’s Choice Award

AKRIDGE SERVED AS THE OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE AND DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR THE AWARD-WINNING MUSEUM AND CULTURAL DESTINATION IN DOWNTOWN, WASHINGTON, DC

(Washington, DC) Akridge congratulates Milken Center for the Advancement of the American Dream (MCAAD) for receiving the Juror's Choice Award at Urban Land Institute Washington's annual Awards for Excellence event. The recognition honors the transformation of three historic buildings near the White House into a unified, 240,000-square-foot mixed-use complex, which includes a, 70,000-square-foot museum and cultural destination dedicated to celebrating the pillars of the American Dream: education, health, entrepreneurship, and financial empowerment.

Akridge is proud to have served as owner's representative and development manager for the Milken Institute, leading the project from early planning, site acquisition, and entitlements through final delivery. The award reflects not only the vision behind the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, but also the complex coordination, technical execution, and disciplined project leadership required to bring that vision to life.

As owner's representative and development manager, Akridge provided hands-on, day-to-day leadership and served as the central point of coordination for the full project team. Akridge worked closely with Shalom Baranes Associates, OTJ Architects, Grunley Construction Company, public agencies, and key stakeholders to guide the project through a highly complex development process involving historic structures, multiple design teams, stakeholder engagement, intricate approvals, and meticulous construction.

The successful delivery of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream required the full range of Akridge's development management expertise, including protecting the owner's interests, aligning project partners, navigating entitlement and site challenges, managing schedule and budget priorities, and supporting design and construction decisions that balanced historic preservation with a modern museum experience.

The Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream transforms three historic buildings into a cohesive institution that honors the past while supporting a contemporary mission of storytelling, education, and interactive engagement. Working within landmark structures, Akridge and the project team preserved significant architectural details while integrating modern building systems, state-of-the-art technology, and immersive exhibit environments.

Inside, the museum features a mix of restored architectural character and interactive experiences, including an immersive 360-degree theater, holographic storytellers reflecting on the meaning of the American Dream, a suspended "word cloud" exhibit element, and an interactive "tree of generations" at the entry. Together, these elements invite visitors to connect with the individuals who have shaped and expanded the American Dream while inspiring future generations to imagine and pursue their own paths of achievement.
