Media Advisory: San José Youth Climate Action Fund Applications Open

The City of San José is now accepting applications for the City of San José's Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF), a microgrant program that will provide $1,000 to $5,000 to support youth-led projects that advance local climate goals.

Funded through the Bloomberg Philanthropies, the program is part of a global initiative supporting youth-led climate action in 300 cities across six continents. The initiative empowers young people to develop hands-on projects that create lasting environmental and community benefits.

Projects should primarily address one or more of the following climate focus areas: Healthy Homes & Clean Energy, Climate-Friendly Transportation, or Climate Resilience & Healthy Neighborhoods.

Youth applicants must partner with an Eligible Lead Organization (ELO), such as a nonprofit, school, public agency, or other qualifying organization that meets the requirements outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. The organization will provide fiscal oversight, administrative support, and organizational guidance while allowing youth to remain the primary project leaders. An ELO is an eligible organization that enters into an agreement with the City and receives and administers grant funds on behalf of the youth-led project.

Organizations cannot apply independently of youth project leaders. Projects must demonstrate meaningful youth leadership throughout planning, implementation, and evaluation. Adults and supporting organizations may provide mentorship and administrative support but should not direct the project.

The City will host a Youth Climate Project Workshop on Zoom on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 1-2:30 p.m. Youth and organizations interested in supporting youth-led projects are encouraged to attend. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the program and explore project ideas. Register for the Climate Smart San José Youth Climate Project Workshop.
