BASSE Charter to close in June
Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, with the assent of the State Board of Education, announced the revocation of the Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence (BASSE) charter at the end of this school year due to enrollment, financial and organizational concerns.
The Delaware Department of Education's Charter School Accountability Committee (CSAC) recommended the revocation of the charter last month following a formal review process. In making her decision, Marten considered information from CSAC reports, the school's responses and public comment, including two public hearings.
BASSE students may return to the district schools in their home feeder patterns or choice into another district or charter school that is accepting students for the 2026-27 academic year. The school's closure is considered "good cause" to allow students to apply after the School Choice deadline, which was in January.
Marten placed BASSE on formal review in December. Formal review is the lawful investigation of a charter school to determine whether the school is violating the terms of its charter.
