Message by the President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas to the Greek Diaspora on the occasion of the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence

Dear Compatriots,

It is with profound emotion that we commemorate once again the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, a defining historical milestone which led to the establishment of the modern Greek state and shaped the course of Hellenism all over the world, forging a strong national consciousness.

In this context, our thoughts turn not only to the fighters who raised the banner of Freedom on our ancestral soil, but also to the Greeks of the Diaspora, whose contribution was pivotal to the rebirth of the Nation after more than 400 years of Ottoman rule.

The Revolution of 1821 was not only a glorious armed struggle, but also an intellectual one, inspired by the timeless values of Hellenism and the teachings of the European Enlightenment. The Greek Diaspora, in close cooperation with the Philhellenic movement, transformed cities such as Paris, Marseille, London, Vienna, Odessa, Trieste, and many others into vibrant centers of support for the Struggle. In these places, the Greek Diaspora preserved Greek education and cultivated the ideals of freedom and national independence. It was there that the intellectual rebirth of the subjugated Nation was founded, the Philiki Etaireia was established, the necessary resources were gathered, and the network enabling the launch and sustained support of the Struggle was formed.

At that time, Greeks of the Diaspora stood by our homeland with selflessness, devotion, and unparalleled resolve. By carrying forward this great legacy, you continue to support Greece with unwavering dedication, promoting Greek culture and preserving our ancient language and timeless values in every corner of the world.

A world which, regrettably, is beset today by successive crises, protracted armed conflicts, and growing insecurity and instability. From Ukraine to the Middle East, and from Africa to the Eastern Mediterranean, the principles of the United Nations Charter and the rules of International Law are being violated on a daily basis, calling into question the international order established after the end of the Second World War.

In this adverse environment, Greece remains a strong beacon of democracy, peace, and stability. With realism, confidence in our strengths, and commitment to international legitimacy, we defend the independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity of our homeland, as well as the rights and the stature of Hellenism worldwide. The recent deployment of Greek air and naval forces to Cyprus sent both a symbolic and substantive message that Greece will always stand by the Hellenism of Cyprus.

At the same time, our thoughts and hearts are with the Greeks living in regions afflicted by war, whether in Ukraine or, of course, in the Middle East. We are aware that many of you experience daily uncertainty and concern for the safety of your families. The Greek State remains constantly vigilant, closely monitoring developments and standing by your side, making use of every available means.

Greeks of the world,

The Greek Diaspora constitutes a vibrant force that works, progresses, and projects Greece's voice far beyond its borders. On this day, I express to you the sincere gratitude of us all. Greece honors you and is proud of you being an integral part of our national course. Let us never forget that Hellenism endures and thrives whenever it stands united and resolute in the face of the challenges and hardships of each era.

With these thoughts, I invite you to celebrate this great day of the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary with joy and pride. I wholeheartedly wish to you all, many happy returns, health and progress!
