Dialogue and Negotiation Will Strengthen Mexico
  • Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente led a discussion today on "Humanism in Mexico's Foreign Policy"
  • He highlighted President Claudia Sheinbaum's strong leadership, enormous popular support, clear vision, and ability to transform ideas into action as key factors in building bridges of understanding with nations worldwide during these turbulent times
  • The forum examined humanist values contained in Mexico's diplomatic traditions and their significance in today's international context

Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente affirmed today that Mexico will strengthen its bilateral relations through dialogue and negotiation. This approach will also guide Mexico's multilateral relationships, which require thorough examination amid profound global changes.

Foreign Secretary De la Fuente noted during the inauguration of the forum on Humanism in Mexico's Foreign Policy that President Claudia Sheinbaum's strong leadership has enabled Mexico to build bridges of understanding with all nations worldwide. Her substantial popular support, clear ideas, and ability to put them into action have been especially valuable in these turbulent times.

Speaking to diplomats, academics, and specialists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Foreign Secretary De la Fuente emphasized that Mexican diplomacy embodies a humanist vision through its consistent support for justice, peace, and fraternity. These principles will continue guiding Mexico's advancement now and in future challenges.

"Mexico has always promoted an international order where all voices count and are taken into account, where all cultures have intrinsic value that must be recognized, and where, above all, Mexico has insisted that diplomacy is the best way to resolve differences," he stated.

Foreign Secretary De la Fuente welcomed the opportunity for collective thinking about ways to strengthen and refine strategic approaches. He proposed exploring how Mexico could increase its influence in the international arena under President Sheinbaum's leadership.

In his remarks, he cited clear examples of this humanism in foreign policy, such as Mexico's firm and historic position in favor of nuclear disarmament. "This is one of the most humanist expressions of our diplomacy because this position is faithful, first, to a commitment to people's lives themselves, to a vocation for peace that roots itself in justice and reason," he said.

He also noted that Mexico hosted the first International Women's Conference in 1975. Foreign Secretary De la Fuente added that in the current era of increased female representation, maintaining a feminist foreign policy further demonstrates Mexico's commitment to humanist principles in international relations.

This forum for reflection-which was joined remotely by the heads of Mexico's diplomatic missions worldwide-built upon proposals and concepts presented at the 36th Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls (REC) 2025.

Distinguished panelists discussed the humanist values guiding Mexican foreign policy throughout history and their resulting achievements.

Participants thoroughly analyzed Mexico's role in establishing the United Nations system and emphasized the importance of dialogue and understanding amid current geopolitical tensions and increasing unilateral approaches.

They also highlighted the importance of a foreign policy that defends our citizens, safeguards national interests, and advances ethical leadership in the global arena, while prioritizing human dignity, solidarity, and sustainable development.

With this forum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its commitment to diplomacy governed by constitutional principles of foreign policy and humanist action both within and outside Mexico.
