INDEPENDENCE DAY ADDRESS BY THE HEAD OF STATE AFIOGA TUIMALEALIIFANO VAALETO'A SUALAUV III. 63 years of Independence, 2nd June, 2025 Apia, Samoa

Today, we gather in solemn tribute and heartfelt gratitude to Almighty God, whose enduring grace has once again united us in a spirit of peace and reflection.

In this sacred moment, we humbly acknowledge His divine hand that has faithfully guided Samoa through the tides of history, leading us safely to this momentous occasion, the commemoration of sixty-three years of our independence as a sovereign nation. And through our celebration today, we declare and affirm that all honour and glory belong to God for our heritage from Him, and for the progress and development we have achieved as a nation.

In contemplating the unfolding of time, and the challenges and trials that have defined our national story over these sixty-three years, we remember with abiding love and solemn reverence our forefathers, who valiantly championed our freedom, and laid the foundations of our sovereignty. And we hold an unwavering conviction, that God's bountiful grace and unfailing faithfulness guided them in their pursuit of independence, and crowned their efforts with triumph. That same boundless grace and unwavering faithfulness of God have guided, protected, and preserved our identity and legacy through the generations, empowering us as a people and nation, to govern ourselves and shape the course of our own destiny.

Challenges and trials are enduring truths of life. Yet, in the face of adversity, I am reminded of the timeless words of the Psalmist, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord". With conviction and pride, I echo, "Blessed is Samoa whose God is the Lord," as declared in our Constitution. Through our trials and tribulations, He has been our shield, our glory, and the lifter of our heads. And, in declaring that God is the foundation of our strength as an Independent State, we affirm our steadfast faith that when God is at the heart of our lives, we shall be blessed as a nation; and no force of this world, and no scheme to divide, disrupt or sow dissension amongst our people, can prevail against a sovereign country, anchored in divine purpose. Even the deepest divides can be bridged, and every adversity can be overcome as we press forward in unity and progress.

I offer my heartfelt gratitude to the church leaders and clergy of all Christian denominations across Samoa. Your steadfast commitment and faithful intercession have played a vital role in upholding the peace and unity of our nation, especially through times of hardship and uncertainty.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Honourable Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Honourable Speaker and Members of Parliament, His Honour the Chief Justice and Judiciary. Thank you for your tireless efforts in guiding our nation forward. Your leadership, vision, and commitment to the betterment of Samoa, and the upholding of the law and justice for all, are deeply appreciated.

To all government ministries and corporations, your hard work, collaboration, and service to our nation, do not go unnoticed.

I acknowledge the leaders and people of our districts, villages, and communities. I am deeply grateful for your continued efforts and invaluable contribution to the advancement of our country, particularly our government. Your far-reaching influence and steadfast commitment remain the bedrock upon which Samoa's enduring peace is sustained and dignity upheld.

To our beloved relatives and friends residing abroad, thank you for your steadfast support and love for Samoa.

To the business community, thank you for your commitment to economic growth, and providing opportunities and livelihood for our people.

To our various organisations offering support and assistance to our people with special needs, thank you for your compassion and your tireless work.

To our development partners, thank you for standing with Samoa in our journey of growth and resilience

To our children and schools who are with us this morning to witness our Independence celebration, and participate in the march past, I am proud of you. Remember, you are the enduring hope and future of our nation. One day, some of you will be the leaders of Samoa.

As we reflect on the journey we have taken, may we never forget the blessings we share as a people and nation; rooted in faith, love, and family, the precious values that continue to guide us through every challenge and triumph.

Now, more than ever, I make a heartfelt plea.

Samoa, let us go forward as a nation, bound not by differences, but by the spirit of peace, unity, and respect for one another.

Let us walk together in humility and compassion, guided always by our faith in God, who will never forsake us.

Let us rise above division, and hold fast to the truth, that we are stronger when we are united, and strongest when we have God and love within us.

As the Holy Scriptures declare, Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things; believes all things; hopes all things; endures all things. Love never ends.

May God bless Samoa and our celebration of 63 years of independence. May His grace and special favour be upon you all.

Soifua.
