Garden Street Bridge Closure Scheduled for July 7th

To the residents in the area of Garden Street, Brookside Avenue, West Oakley Street, and Zimmer Avenue. The project to replace the Garden Street Bridge over the Fall Kill Creek will start on or around July 7, 2025. One week in advance of the required bridge closure and removal a variable message sign (vms) will be placed at each end of garden street seven (7) days prior. The vms will have a message indicating when the road will be closed.

  • Crosswalks needed for pedestrian safety.
  • To improve radius from Brookside Avenue, to Garden Street.
  • Repair bridge deck and sidewalk concrete.
  • Fix existing undermined abutments and compromised foundation.
  • Improve provisions for cyclist traffic in project area.

There will be signage placed to guide the public through the required detour (see map below). The length of the project is expected to be approximately 8 months. The Poughkeepsie City School District transportation System has been made aware as well as the City Police, Fire, and EMS.

Project objectives will extend the lifecycle of the bridge by at least 50 years, minimize lifecycle cost, eliminate structural deficiencies and upgrade and expand operational performance.
