Congressman Shri Thanedar Celebrates Community Victory Against Romulus ICE Detention Center

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) celebrates the announcement of ICE abandoning plans for the Romulus Detention Center.

"ICE will not be opening a detention center in Romulus," said Rep. Thanedar. "Southeast Michigan communities came together, made our voices heard, and stopped this horrific project. I'm grateful to everyone, including residents, advocates, and leaders at every level of government, who stood up and helped make this happen.

Our work to stand up to this corrupt administration is not over, but this is a moment worth celebrating. It should encourage us to keep fighting, because when we come together, our voices will be heard and we will win."

Rep. Thanedar has been a fierce advocate against the Romulus ICE facility from the beginning, petitioning against it and holding press conferences at the proposed site. He strongly opposes ICE's corrupt actions and has introduced legislation to abolish ICE and end qualified immunity for ICE agents.

As a result, the originally planned press conference scheduled for June 22, 2026, has been postponed until further notice.

Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes. As a champion for working families, Shri is committed to advancing economic opportunities, education, healthcare access, and entrepreneurship for underserved communities. Drawing from his journey from poverty to success, he works tirelessly to uplift Metro Detroit, ensuring every resident has the resources and support they need to thrive.
