In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a Mexican delegation composed of officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, the Navy, and Security and Citizen Protection, along with representatives from the host states, took part in the Trilateral Meeting on Major Events Security Cooperation, held in Washington, D.C. and organized by the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The meeting brought together the military and naval attachés of Mexico's Permanent Mission to the OAS, along with expert delegations from Mexico, the United States, and Canada, to continue the trilateral work among the three governments in the lead-up to the World Cup.
Over two days of working sessions with major sporting event specialists and United Nations experts, participants examined each country's national security frameworks. They identified shared challenges, refined information-sharing mechanisms, and developed joint strategies on sports diplomacy, national image, and the protection of major international events.
At the opening session, Mexico's Permanent Representative to the OAS, Alejandro Encinas, stated that Mexico is prepared and ready to welcome the world. He highlighted the country's progress in coordinating with its North American partners to ensure the World Cup unfolds safely and cooperatively.
These initiatives are part of the comprehensive security strategy that the Mexican government has developed alongside FIFA to guarantee the safety of attendees, international delegations, and participants throughout the competition.
The meeting will also allow the three countries to draw on and document lessons learned from their joint organization of this World Cup.
In addition to Alejandro Encinas, participants included Alfonso Zegbe, Head of the Interagency Coordination Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Colonel Rubén Arana, Head of the Operations Group at the FIFA 2026 World Cup Coordination Center of the Ministry of National Defense; officials from the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection; Pamela Reducindo, Coordinator of International Affairs at the Mexico City Ministry of Citizen Security; and Commissioner Jorge Sergio Ron Cárdenas, Director General of the Comprehensive Coordination Center for Control, Command, Communications and Computing (C5) at the Nuevo León State Ministry of Security.
