Ernst Names Small Business of the Week, The Goose

Throughout this Congress, Chair Ernst plans to recognize a small business in every one of Iowa's 99 counties.

RED OAK, Iowa - U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee, today announced her Small Business of the Week: The Goose of Dallas County. Throughout the 119th Congress, Chair Ernst plans to recognize a small business in each of Iowa's 99 counties.

"The Goose has flown above and beyond by demonstrating the values of community, loyalty, and determination in its business practices," said Chair Ernst. "To many, The Goose is more than an ice cream shop that has goose vibes, it is a place where people can gather, encourage one another, and experience life's simple joys."

The idea for The Goose began when owners Rob and Nickie Merkle went for a jog in their hometown of Van Meter. During their run, the Merkles came across a vacant building on their town's main street. Seeing this as an opportunity to fulfill the town's need for a community space, Rob and Nickie bought the property. The two envisioned their shop as a place where customers connect with one another. The Goose officially opened in July 2026.

Despite being open for only a few months, The Goose already plays a key role in Van Meter. Under Nickie and Rob's leadership, The Goose has flourished into a thriving hub where people gather and socialize over a simple cup of ice cream or coffee. It is exactly what the Merkles envisioned. Additionally, The Goose remains an active member in the community by partnering up with a local elementary school to showcase student designs on the coffee cup sleeves.

Stay tuned as Chair Ernst continues to recognize outstanding Iowa small businesses with her Small Business of the Week award.
