SALEM, Ore. - The Oregon chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety's grassroots network, released the following statements after the Oregon Senate voted unanimously to pass HB 4145, and the House subsequently concurred on amendments. The bill, which gives the state more time to establish Oregon's voter-approved permit-to-purchase system, now heads to the Governor's desk for signature.
"In 2022, Oregonians sent a clear message at the ballot box: they want a state that prioritizes prevention over reaction. By passing HB 4145, the legislature has taken a necessary step to ensure that the state has the time it needs to finish building the permit-to-purchase system," said Lisa Bosotina, a volunteer with the Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action. "While the road to full implementation has faced many hurdles and delays, our commitment to this life-saving system remains unshakable. While we wanted to see substantive improvements to the law passed in 2022, we acknowledge that our leaders have kept the permit-to-purchase system on the path to reality with this bill."
"For students in Oregon, every delay in gun safety implementation is felt deeply. We see HB 4145 as a commitment from our lawmakers that Measure 114 will not be left on a shelf," said Cecilia Cox, a volunteer with the Crescent Lake High School chapter of Students Demand Action. "It's a longer road than we hoped for, but we are holding the line to ensure the will of the voters is carried out. This framework is a promise to our generation that common-sense safety is coming, and we won't stop advocating until this system is fully protecting our communities."
