Housing, Infrastructure, and Transportation Working Group Chair Norma Torres on House Passage of the Housing for the 21st Century Act
Washington, D.C. - Today, New Democrat Coalition Housing, Infrastructure, and Transportation Working Group Chair Norma Torres (CA-35) issued a statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 6644, Housing for the 21st Century Act.
Today's vote supports American families looking to not just get by, but get ahead. The United States needs approximately 3.8 million more homes to meet demand, and the federal government should be a partner for Americans looking to afford a home.
As laid out in the Coalition's Housing Affordability Agenda, New Dems will continue to pursue policies that build more housing, get homes on the market and into the hands of families, and make it easier to buy, rent, or sell a home.
Working Group Chair Norma Torres issued the following statement on House passage of the Housing for the 21st Century Act:
"At a moment where so many families across the country are feeling the strain of rising rents and home prices, it is encouraging to see the House advance serious policies to address the housing crisis. This package reflects the urgency of that crisis and demonstrates real momentum toward expanding housing supply and lowering costs for Americans.
"I'm especially proud that this legislation reflects many of the recommendations from New Dems' Housing Affordability Agenda, including 11 bills sponsored by New Dem Members to build more homes, get them on the market faster, and surge resources where they're needed most.
"Looking ahead, we hope to see the entire universe of housing solutions, including the 13 bills sponsored by New Dem Members in the Senate-passed ROAD to Housing Act, brought together in a conference to produce a final, comprehensive package. By doing so, we can move swiftly to get meaningful housing legislation to the President's desk and deliver the affordable, accessible homes that working families deserve."
