BPD Remembers: In the early morning hours of Christmas 97 years ago, December 25, 1927, Officer Herbert Allen was killed while on motorcycle patrol in the area of Washington and Fairbanks Streets in Brighton at about 12:50am. Allen was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Officer Allen was 32-years-old at the time of his death. Making his line of duty death ever more tragic is the fact that he was survived by and left behind his wife and two sons.

Officer Allen was laid to rest at the Green Street Cemetery in Marblehead. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.

In addition to the above, a Hero Sign, dedicated to Officer Allen's service and sacrifice, is posted at the intersection of Washington and Fairbanks Streets in Brighton to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life while protecting and serving others. Should you ever happen to find yourself in that area, please keep an eye out for his Hero Sign and kindly take a moment, not only to honor his sacrifice, but to remember the loved ones left in mourning after his tragic passing so many years ago.
