Historical Marker Unveiling Ceremony to Honor Harriet Tubman’s Contributions to Freedom, Underground Railroad

WHAT:


The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with Dorchester County and the Harriet Tubman Freedom Center, will hold an unveiling of a new Harriet Tubman Historical Marker honoring the life, legacy, and courage of Tubman's contributions to American history and the fight for freedom. The event takes place during International Underground Railroad Month and on the date Tubman escaped slavery in 1849.

WHY:

Governor Wes Moore proclaimed September 2024 as the sixth annual International Underground Railroad Month in Maryland. The month acknowledges the significance of the Underground Railroad, and all those involved, for its contribution to the eradication of legal enslavement in the United States and as a cornerstone for the more comprehensive civil rights movement that followed.
