TDOT opening S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy to five lanes

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has indicated it plans to open traffic on S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy between Old Fort Parkway (S.R. 96) and near I-24 to all five lanes, Jan. 17 , 2025. This is Phase II of TDOT's S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy widening project, widening a 1.4-mile section from Old Fort Parkway to Middle Tennessee Blvd. from two lanes to five lanes near I-24.

Once all lanes are open, there will still be intermittent lane closures and shoulder closures required on S.R. 99 to finish the remaining work, including final paving to improve roadway smoothness and utility relocation.

Phase III of New Salem Hwy project will widen the roadway from Cason Lane to Veterans Pkwy from two and three lanes to five lanes. TDOT let bids in October and construction is set to begin in early 2025. The total 3-phase project covers approximately seven miles but excludes the area within the I-24 interchange, as that section was previously widened under a separate project.

Phase I, a 2.0-mile section, Cason Lane to I-24, was completed in September 2021. Due to the size, the project was separated into three phases.

City engineers and construction companies are constantly working to enhance traffic flow. The projects widen sections of roadways, add turn lanes to enhance traffic flow, resurface major corridors, upgrade traffic signal systems, and realign roadways to make enhanced connections.
