Michal: Next EU budget must reflect the greater security burden faced by eastern border countries

"The next budget must address Europe's security needs. Europe must invest more in defence, competitiveness, critical connections and support for Ukraine," Michal said.

Estonia supports the European Commission's proposal for the EU's next long-term budget. "Europe needs an ambitious budget that strengthens our security and supports economic growth. EU funding must help increase the production capacity of Europe's defence industry, improve military mobility, and strengthen critical energy and transport infrastructure. Rail Baltica and other cross-border connections are investments in both our economy and our security," the Prime Minister said.

Michal stressed that the next budget must also reflect the greater security burden borne by countries on the EU's eastern border. "Eastern border countries protect the external borders of both the European Union and NATO. This must also be reflected in our common budget," he said.

Speaking about Ukraine, Michal emphasised that Europe must continue providing Ukraine with military, economic and political support for as long as necessary. At the same time, pressure on Russia must be maintained, particularly through sanctions.

"We must also move forward with Ukraine's accession to the European Union and open all remaining negotiating clusters. Ukraine's membership will strengthen the security of both Ukraine and the European Union," Michal said.
