New degree program aims to advance healthcare leadership in state, region

The Physician Assistant program in the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences at Campbell University is expanding opportunities for PAs with the launch of its new Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program, a doctoral degree designed to help practicing PAs grow as leaders, educators, researchers and innovators across healthcare.

Developed specifically for licensed and practicing PAs, the Doctor of Medical Science program combines academic advancement with flexibility for working professionals. Delivered fully online in an asynchronous format, the program allows students to continue practicing while pursuing doctoral education and expanding their impact in healthcare.

The DMSc is designed as a 36-credit-hour post-professional doctorate, with eligible students able to transfer up to 12 credit hours from previous master's coursework. Students complete the remaining 24 credit hours in four semesters through a combination of core coursework, a focused concentration track and an applied doctoral capstone project.

Participants will choose from one of three specialized tracks:

  • Clinical Leadership
  • Health Professions Education
  • Clinical Research and Medical Affairs

Competitive applicants must hold a master's degree from an ARC-PA accredited program with a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, maintain certification and licensure as a PA, and have at least three years of clinical experience practicing as a PA. Batchelor's trained PAs who have earned a separate graduate degree in a related field are also eligible to apply. Additional application materials include two professional letters of recommendation, a personal statement, official transcripts and a current résumé or curriculum vitae.

PA student shares about his research.

"This program represents an exciting new chapter for our PA program and for practicing PAs who are ready to continue growing professionally," said Dr. Ashley Nordan, DMSc program chair and Campbell PA alumna. "We are thrilled to offer this opportunity and to welcome PAs into the distinctive Campbell experience as they pursue their doctoral degree. Through flexible learning, meaningful mentorship and focused leadership development, graduates will be prepared to shape the future of healthcare in their communities and beyond."

Applications for the inaugural cohort are expected to open in June 2026, with classes beginning in January 2027. The Doctor of Medical Science program is offered under the institutional accreditation of Campbell University through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
