Moulton Co-Sponsors Bipartisan War Powers Resolution to Block War in Venezuela

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06), a Marine Corps veteran who served four tours in Iraq, has joined the bipartisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02) as an original co-sponsor. The resolution prohibits any further U.S. military action in Venezuela and reasserts Congress's constitutional authority over matters of war and peace.
"We cannot let the Trump Administration drag us into another forever war. The American people, through their elected representatives, decide when we go to war-and they do not want war in Venezuela," said Congressman Moulton. "As someone who has seen firsthand the cost of rushing into conflict for the wrong reasons, I know that Venezuelan oil is not worth sending America's sons and daughters into harm's way. I wish members of Congress had not abdicated their responsibility ahead of the invasion of Iraq. This resolution will force a vote to hold the Trump Administration accountable for its actions, and prevent a war that the American people do not want and Congress did not approve."

The War Powers Resolution, led by Congressman McGovern and supported by members of both parties, comes amid growing concerns over recent illegal military actions in Venezuela that were undertaken without approval from Congress. The resolution would require the Trump Administration to halt U.S. military involvement in Venezuela unless Congress explicitly approves such action, consistent with the War Powers Act and the Constitution.
Congressman Moulton spoke about the need for Congress to reassert its authority in authorizing such military operations during a press conference with 11 other Democratic veteran members of Congress yesterday. You can watch the press conference here.
