IFJ Centenary Congress calls for stronger protection for journalists worldwide

The Congress officially opened on 4 May at the Théâtre de la Concorde , where participants highlighted growing threats to press freedom and the urgent need to strengthen protections for journalists worldwide.

From 5 to 7 May, delegates continued discussions focusing on the growing pressures facing journalists and media workers worldwide. Discussions addressed online violence, surveillance technologies, attacks targeting women journalists, and the financial fragility of independent media outlets.

In a video message to participants, Mariya Gabriel, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, stressed the importance of protecting independent journalism for democratic societies and lasting peace:
