OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN TO MALAYSIA

9-10 JANUARY 2025

Prime Minister of Japan Shigeru Ishiba will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from 9 to 10 January 2025. This marks Prime Minister Ishiba's first visit to Malaysia since his appointment as Prime Minister of Japan in October 2024.

Prime Minister Ishiba will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, to be followed by a delegation meeting with Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Japan bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment, human resource development and energy cooperation. The two Prime Ministers are also expected to exchange views on various regional and international issues of common interest including the situation in the Middle East.

Following their meeting, they will address the media at a joint press conference. The Prime Minister will also host a luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex in honour of Prime Minister Ishiba.

As of June 2024, a total of 2,821 manufacturing projects with Japanese participation have been implemented in Malaysia, with total investments worth RM105.2 billion (USD30.4 billion). These projects have generated employment for 344,996 people, with Japan ranked as the 4 th largest foreign investor in terms of implemented manufacturing projects. Japan remained Malaysia's fourth largest trading partner with a total trade of RM156.75 billion (USD34.41 billion) in 2023. Trade between January to November 2024 was recorded at RM140.62 billion (USD30.67 billion).

Malaysia's ties with Japan have grown from strength to strength with the elevation of bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in December 2023.
