After repeatedly promising that Social Security is "100% safe," Trump administration officials are once again saying the quiet part out loud: They're coming after America's seniors. First, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that Trump's billionaire-first budget bill is a "backdoor" to privatizing Social Security. And yesterday, Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano confessed that the Trump administration is open to raising the retirement age.
In response, DNC spokesperson Jaelin O'Halloran released the following statement:
"Millions of Americans rely on Social Security to retire after years of hard work. It's a lifeline that has provided financial stability for millions of families. But to no one's surprise, Donald Trump and his administration are continuing their crusade to gut the program despite his campaign promises. It's clear that Trump will never miss an opportunity to sell out working families and seniors if it means that his billionaire buddies and donors will make an extra buck."
Reminder: In July, Bessent admitted that the Trump Accounts created by the budget bill are a "backdoor for privatizing Social Security." After realizing that he put his foot in his mouth, Bessent had to do damage control on his comments. But just yesterday, SSA Commissioner Bisignano admitted that he would consider raising the retirement age. Turns out - to no one's surprise - that Trump's promises to protect Social Security were just talk.
