In most contexts, low numbers can go unnoticed. But at Despensa Familiar Store 0926 in San Luis Petén, Guatemala, low turnover speaks volumes.
The store has achieved something to celebrate: over the past two years, it has maintained remarkably low turnover numbers.
Despite being the smallest of Walmart's formats in Guatemala - and located in a small town - Despensa Familiar is achieving big results.
For Rodrigo Ruata, director of operations for Bi Formato in Guatemala, which includes Maxi Despensa and Despensa Familiar, the numbers reflect thoughtful leadership and a focus on building the kind of culture that allows associates to succeed.
"This store's unwavering retention is no accident," Rodrigo said. "It comes from putting associates first and leading with service."
Keeping the team happy and engaged brings stability, consistent results and lower costs. At Store 0926, the high retention rate is a symbol of commitment and care.
In the retail business worldwide, low turnover is relatively rare. At Walmart, we're working constantly to become the employer of choice for our associates - a place where people start with a job and end up building a career. At the core of that mission? Culture, leadership, opportunity.
But the question remains: How is it possible to run a store where associates are so committed?
The answer lies with Clara Luz Rivas Figueroa, who has been the store manager at 0926 for five years. Her journey began in 2007 as a butcher's assistant, and over the 18 years she's been with Walmart, she's worked in nearly every area of the business. One of the most memorable moments for her came during Associates Week 2025 in Bentonville, where she was recognized among thousands of peers for the outstanding performance of her store.
Clara's 12-person team operates like a family, nurturing talent and driving results. In early 2025, their small but mighty store was named Best Store in Central America at the JIA (Junta de Inicio de Año) in Costa Rica.
The formula she follows with her associates is simple but powerful: training, opportunity and trust.
"We teach our team and give them chances to grow." Clara said. "If someone is struggling, we sit with them right away, listen, and help them take the next step. No one is left behind here."
Clara's associates describe her as the kind of leader who makes every day feel collaborative. She starts each shift by greeting the team, creating space for conversation, and guiding them through challenges.
"Clara is a steady presence, always listens and advises, and gently points us toward solutions," said Onelda Molina, one of the associates at the store. To Wanner Aguirre, an associate in the cash office, "she is an inspiration who leads with respect and patience. She never pressures us."
"This is what 'people led' looks like," said Laura Bustamante, a people manager in Guatemala. "Servant leaders who serve, listen, and inspire create the conditions for associates to thrive - and this store's low turnover says it all. When associates feel that support, they tie their growth to our mission and choose to stay with us."
Clara's leadership echoes far beyond the aisles of Store 0926. It's a call to every associate and every leader: Believe in your people. Invest in their growth. Lead with heart. Because when you do, even the quietest corners of the world can shine the brightest.
