Rep. Sykes Votes to Stop Unauthorized Military Action in Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) released the following statement after voting in favor of a war powers resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities in Iran that have not been authorized by Congress. The resolution did not pass the House.

The vote comes after President Donald Trump ordered strikes in Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, other senior officials, and many civilians. In response, six U.S. service members have been killed in Iranian retaliatory attacks.

"Congress alone has the constitutional authority to declare war," Rep. Sykes said. "President Trump cannot send Americans into harm's way without our approval. Six of our troops have already died, and the cost is rising. Meanwhile, he should be focused on lowering costs for everyday Americans at home - making life more affordable, as he promised - not escalating a war thousands of miles away."

The war powers resolution is designed to protect congressional oversight of military action while allowing the president to act in real emergencies. Rep. Sykes vowed to continue fighting for the safety of U.S. troops, support for military families, and a deliberate, constitutional approach to decisions of war and peace.
