Tuberville Introduces Legislation to Save College Sports, Rein in NIL

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) introduced the Student-Athlete Act, which would address some of the issues plaguing college sports today by moderating the transfer portal and clarifying eligibility rules. Sen. Tuberville's bill would allow student-athletes to have five consecutive years to play in five consecutive seasons. It would also put guardrails around the transfer portal to allow for a one-time transfer without penalty. Any subsequent transfers would result in the player sitting out a season.

As someone who spent nearly 40 years in coaching, Sen. Tuberville has been a leading voice for prioritizing education when it comes to college athletics. While drafting the legislation, Sen. Tuberville has spoken with students, coaches, administrators, organizations, and other stakeholders.

"College athletics used to be about education, now it's sadly all about making money," said Sen. Tuberville. "We can't be having 25-year-old 'students' who graduated three years ago still competing in the NCAA. With my bill, a student-athlete gets five years to get their education, compete, and then move on. We also have to make sure students are getting a good education, which won't happen if they are transferring every year. I'm all for student-athletes making money, but we have to create some national guidelines as the current system is broken. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get this commonsense bill across the finish line."
