Denver - Today, Mayor Mike Johnston gathered with city leaders and 2nd graders at Teller Elementary School to celebrate the city's first all-electric refuse truck! Denver's Solid Waste Management team will place the unit into service this week and, for about the next two years, test how it performs on the street. The truck is anticipated to go 125 miles on a charge.
The use of alternative fuel vehicles furthers Denver's goals of reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality. The City and County of Denver thanks Xcel Energy's Partnership for Research and Innovation Program for providing $470,000 to fund the vehicle's 24-month lease, charging infrastructure, and distinctive vehicle wrap.
The truck Denver is piloting is a zero-emissions Mack LR Electric. DOTI will test how the unit works collecting a variety of materials (trash, compost, and recycling) at different times of year. The truck will be utilized in every Denver neighborhood over the course of the two-year pilot, starting in Denver City Council District 10. In addition to running cleaner, the truck will be quieter!
