“May the Force Be With You!” Amo Secures Committee Passage of Bipartisan Bill to Improve AI Literacy for K-12 Students

WASHINGTON, DC - TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI), member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, applauded committee passage of his bipartisan Literacy in Future Technologies (LIFT) Artificial Intelligence Act, which is co-led by Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07). The bipartisan bill would empower educators and students to become informed, responsible AI users.

"AI is here, it's here to stay, and we need to prepare the next generation for this new reality," said Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI). "My LIFT AI Act would invest in AI literacy for K-12 students, and support professional learning opportunities for educators and school administrators. I'm grateful to Congressman Kean and my colleagues on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology for advancing this legislation and ensuring every American has the skills to use AI responsibly."

Background

The LIFT AI Act would:

  • Support a grant program within the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research and development of AI literacy curriculum and evaluation methods for K-12, ensuring that educational materials are learner-centered, project-based, and adaptable.
  • Support professional learning opportunities for educators, principals, and school leaders to enhance their AI literacy and proficiency through courses, mentoring, and best practice development.
  • Promote the creation of hands-on learning tools, the integration of AI literacy into existing curricula, and the development of evaluation tools to assess AI literacy proficiency.
