Transportation

• Second Avenue Subway Project | Manhattan | Ongoing

• Phase 2 of the project will extend the Q subway line, delivering service to East Harlem and Harlem with the creation of stations on Second Avenue at 106 and 116 Streets, as well as 125 Street and Lexington Avenue that will connect to the 4/5/6 subway line and Metro-North Railroad.
  

• John F. Kennedy International Airport | Jamaica, Queens | Ongoing

• Building on the recently completed Terminal 8 (T8) Expansion project, John F. Kennedy Airport announced a commercial redevelopment initiative, including 300-plus new concessions and 60-plus new retail offerings, emphasizing local, minority and women-owned businesses. JFK also saw the groundbreaking of the redevelopment of Terminal 6, which will occupy the site of the former Terminal 6 and Terminal 7, scheduled to open in phases with the completion of the arrivals and departures hall and the first five gates in 2026, and an additional five gates in 2028. Construction is also currently underway at Terminal 1, which will become a state-of-the-art terminal with 23 gates and dining, retail, lounges and recreational space, expected to open in 2026.
  

• Newark Liberty International Airport | New York City Metropolitan Area | Ongoing 

• In addition to the new Terminal A, offering 33 gates serving Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines and directly connected to a multilevel parking facility, EWR is also working toward a new elevated guideway train system to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and ease traffic congestion. Terminal A was given a prestigious five-star rating by Skytrax, the preeminent aviation industry ratings firm, joining LaGuardia Airport's Terminal B as the only two airport terminals in North America awarded this highest rating. 

• Port Authority Bus Terminal Replacement | Midtown Manhattan | 2032

• The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently unveiled an updated design to replace the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The new Midtown Bus Terminal will replace the 73-year-old terminal with a world-class facility designed to meet projected 2040-2050 commuter growth including a main terminal, new ramps leading directly into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel, a central main entrance, more street-level retail, public open space and a multistory indoor atrium.

Developments

• Domino Square at Domino Park | Williamsburg, Brooklyn | September 2024

• Two Trees Management, developer and manager of Domino Park, has unveiled Domino Square-a one-acre public plaza extending the waterfront esplanade. Designed by Field Operations and Studio Cadena, Domino Square will host year-round community events, beginning with Williamsburg's first waterfront ice skating rink, which will open in November.

• Hudson River Park's Pier 97 | Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan | October 2024

• The newly reimagined Pier 97 has opened in Hudson River Park, featuring a sprawling playground with a 26-foot climbing structure, athletic field, and scenic promenade. Highlights also include a sunset deck with stunning Hudson River views, surrounded by 16,000 vibrant flowers and plants.

• Bronx Point| South Bronx | Ongoing

• Bronx Point is a 530,000-square-foot mixed-use development, opening in phases. The development will feature housing, retail, public space, a waterfront promenade and cultural programming including the Hip Hop Museum (opening in 2025).  

• TSX Broadway | Times Square, Manhattan | Ongoing

• TSX Broadway, a new development including a hotel-Tempo by Hilton Times Square-The Palace Theatre, dining, retail and entertainment stages is underway and opening in phases, with the recent unveiling of its 18,000-square-foot podium LED display. Visitors and locals can upload 15-second videos to be broadcast over Times Square.
  

• East Side Coastal Resiliency Project and Floating +POOL at Pier 35 | Lower East Side, Manhattan | 2026

• New York City is opening a filtered floating pool at Pier 35, located on Manhattan's Lower East Side, as part of a $1.4 billion revitalization of the waterfront from East 25th Street to Montgomery Street. The upgrades include reconstructed recreation fields, playgrounds, a new water play area, an amphitheater, and improved access with a rebuilt Corlears Hook Bridge and enhanced bikeways.

• New York City Football Club Stadium | Willets Point, Queens | 2027 

• As part of a private-public partnership, New York City FC will fully finance and build New York's first professional soccer stadium. The Willets Point project will have 25,000 seats, a new public school, 40,000 square feet of public space and see 2,500 affordable homes built for the community. The project will add an estimated 16,000 jobs and $6 billion to the City's economy.

• The New York City Tourism + Conventions signature program returns in January/February 2025, offering 25% off standard room rates at participating hotels.
  

• The Manner | SoHo, Manhattan | September 2024

• This stylish new 97-room hotel includes an all-day restaurant, The Otter, featuring a seafood-heavy menu, as well as a chic cocktail bar, Sloane's. The new hotel also plans to open a rooftop in 2025 reserved exclusively for in-house guests and friends.
  

• The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel | Upper East Side, Manhattan | October 2024

• Corinthia, the renowned luxury hotel brand, will open its first NYC location on the Upper East Side. The new 16-story hotel, now open after an extensive rebuild, includes 70 rooms and aims to honor the property's reputation for glamour and sophistication. 

• The Twenty Two | Union Square, Manhattan | Fall 2024

The London-based hotel plans to open a sibling site in NYC this fall. Located within the Margaret Louisa Home, the 77-room hotel will include 17 suites, a restaurant and a private club for members.

• Park Hyatt New York | Midtown Manhattan | January 2025

• The luxury hotel recently revealed plans to undergo a series of renovations, including the unveiling of its 3,500 square foot Manhattan Suite on the 25th floor. The renovation will also include upgrades to the hotel's premier suites, the Rossano Ferretti Hairspa and Spa Nalai.

• Waldorf Astoria New York | Midtown Manhattan | Spring 2025

• Following a complete renovation and restoration, the famed hotel is projected to reopen next spring featuring its restored historic public and event spaces along with luxury condominiums and 375 large guest rooms and suites, helmed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and renowned interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

• Dominican Center for the Arts and Culture | Washington Heights & Inwood, Manhattan | Ongoing

• A groundbreaking $12.5 million investment is bringing the first-ever Dominican Center for the Arts and Culture to northern Manhattan. Partnering with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, the venue will be a vibrant cultural hub featuring a museum, theater, children's library and exhibition space, along with an oral history and archives project to preserve and showcase the cultural stories of the Dominican community.

• Mercer Labs Museum of Art and Technology | Lower Manhattan | February 2024

• The immersive museum, which also doubles as an event space, is an accessible, family-friendly venue comprising 15 rooms of experiences, including projected art, a 4D sound studio, LED installations, flower rooms and its own signature scent.

• Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) | Dumbo, Brooklyn | February 2024

• The Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) launched a new chapter in Dumbo, Brooklyn, with a location at the Empire Stores building. The museum's first exhibition,Flavor: The World to Your Brain, is an exploration of the sensory experience of flavors in food, offering visitors insight into how the brain experiences taste, among others.

• The center's newly renovated 2,000-seat Colden Auditorium is Queens' largest indoor venue.

• Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center | West Village, Manhattan | June 28, 2024

• The first visitor center within the national park system dedicated to LGBTQ+ history opened in June, honoring and exploring the history of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising at a storefront next door to the historic Stonewall Inn. 
  

• National Urban League's Urban Civil Rights Museum | Harlem, Manhattan | Late 2024/Early 2025

• The museum, which will be housed in National Urban League's new Harlem headquarters, the Urban League Empowerment Center, will be the first dedicated to the American Civil Rights Movement and one of the only museums in the nation to delve into the movement in the North.
  

• The Frick Collection | Upper East Side, Manhattan | Early 2025

• The Frick Collection will return to its original home at The Frick Mansion in early 2025. The repurposed space includes 27,000 square feet of new construction. Additionally, the second floor of the original Frick residence will become accessible to the public for the first time.

• The Studio Museum in Harlem | Harlem, Manhattan | Fall 2025

• The Studio Museum in Harlem will open its new, purpose-built home in fall 2025, featuring extensive exhibition and public spaces designed to serve artists and the Harlem community. To mark the opening, the museum will present a comprehensive showcase of Tom Lloyd's artwork, alongside a historical installation from its permanent collection spanning over two centuries of art by artists of African descent.

• The Hip Hop Museum | South Bronx | 2025

• Located just south of Yankee Stadium, this space will pay homage to the South Bronx's rich culture and history as the birthplace of hip-hop (see Bronx Point in the Developments section above.)

• New Museum | Nolita, Manhattan | 2025

• The New Museum broke ground on a 60,000-square-foot expansion, the first since opening its doors in 2007. The seven-story addition will double the museum's exhibition spaces and feature a new public plaza that will be home to art installations, performances and gatherings.

• Delacorte Theater | Central Park, Manhattan | Summer 2025

• The Public Theater, in partnership with the Central Park Conservancy, NYC Parks and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, has revitalized the 61-year-old institution, which will open with Twelfth Night, starring Lupita Nyong'o, Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sandra Oh. The major investment will dramatically improve the home of Free Shakespeare in the Park, addressing critical infrastructure, accessibility and theatrical needs.

• The American LGBTQ+ Museum | Upper West Side, Manhattan | 2026

• The New-York Historical Society will house a museum dedicated to showcasing global, national and local LGBTQ+ history and culture. Programming is slated to open in 2026. 

• Ellis Island Museum | New York City | 2026

• The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation recently announced a $100 million revitalization of Ellis Island Museum, including technological advancements, reimagined exhibitions and new theaters. In addition to revitalizing the historic museum, the project will expand the Records Discovery Center, increasing the searchable records in its database from 65 million to 154 million.
  

• The People's Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante| Inwood, Manhattan | 2026

• This cultural center will spotlight NYC's immigrant communities through theater, music, dance and community events. In partnership with the New York Public Library, it will also provide programs exploring immigrant stories through art and scholarship. 

• National Black Theater | East Harlem, Manhattan | 2027

• The National Black Theater has embarked on a major capital redevelopment project that will transform the current property. The new multidisciplinary cultural arts facility, dedicated to promoting Black culture through theater, will be housed in 25,000 square feet of a mixed-use development.
  

• Children's Museum of Manhattan | Upper West Side, Manhattan | 2028

• The Children's Museum of Manhattan will open a new 80,000-square-foot location at Central Park West and 96th Street in 2028. The museum will expand its capacity and offer immersive exhibits on topics such as science and the environment. The building will include hands-on learning spaces, a rooftop terrace and an interactive water and sound experience. The museum remains open during construction.

• It's Time for Culture| Citywide | Through October 27, 2024

• The New York City Tourism + Conventions signature program bundling special offerings and events at cultural organizations across the five boroughs, in partnership with Bloomberg Connects, the official app of It's Time for Culture, is available through October 27, 2024. • Taking Care: The Black Angels of Sea View Hospitalat Staten Island Museum | Randall Manor, Staten Island | Through December 2024

• This groundbreaking exhibition commemorates the historic development of a tuberculosis treatment facility on Staten Island in 1951, emphasizing the pivotal role of "The Black Angels," nurses who broke racial barriers and risked their lives to administer the clinical trials. The exhibit features historic objects and archival images, as well as an immersive art film, Back and Song.

• Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry at American Museum of Natural History | Upper West Side, Manhattan | Through January 5, 2025

• Celebrate hip-hop's cultural influence through the iconic and stunning jewelry worn by some of the genre's biggest stars. • Scrap Book features new paintings and a permanent wallpaper installation by artist Evan Paul English, inspired by Alice Austen's love of scrapbooking and botanical imagery. • Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876-Now examines how Black artists and cultural figures have engaged with ancient Egypt through art, literature and performance over nearly 150 years. Featuring around 200 works, the exhibition explores themes like the creation of a unifying identity and the contributions of Black scholars. It also includes a dedicated gallery for performance art, featuring live performances on select days.

• Lillie P. Bliss and the Birth of the Modern at The Museum of Modern Art | Midtown Manhattan | November 17, 2024-March 29, 2025

• The Museum of Modern Art will host this exhibition in celebration of one of its founders and her crucial role in promoting modern art in the US. The exhibit marks 90 years since Bliss's contributions to MoMA and will feature about 40 works. The exhibition will also display archival materials, highlighting her lasting impact on the museum and the acceptance of modern art in America.

• Anne Frank The Exhibition | Union Square, Manhattan | Opening January 27, 2025

• Anne Frank The Exhibition is coming to NYC, presenting a full-scale recreation of Anne Frank's Annex along with over 100 original artifacts, many never seen by the public before. Created by the Anne Frank House in collaboration with the Center for Jewish History, this immersive exhibit provides a unique view into Anne's life, her writing and her resilience. • FIFA has announced New York/New Jersey as the host city for the 2026 World Cup Final. In addition to the final game on July 19, New York/New Jersey will host games on June 13, June 16, June 22, June 25, June 27, June 30 and July 5.
