HARRISBURG - State Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) announced today
House Resolution 420, which designates May 20, 2026, as Jimmy Stewart Day in Pennsylvania, was approved by the House of Representatives.
"Jimmy Stewart represents the best of America," Struzzi said. "While his career in the film industry included mainstays in American movie culture, his willingness to put acting on hold to serve in World War II speaks to his character."
James "Jimmy" Maitland Stewart was a film star of national fame, having starred in over 80 big-screen productions over a 55-year acting career. His most notable role, for which he earned an Oscar nomination, was his portrayal of George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life," arguably the best holiday movie of all time.
Born on May 20, 1908, and raised in Indiana County, Pa., Jimmy Stewart was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Stewart, who owned and operated the J.M. Stewart and Company Hardware Store. Jimmy Stewart was an alumnus of Princeton University and, later in life, was presented with Princeton's highest alumni honor, the Woodrow Wilson Award for outstanding public service.
In 1941, Stewart enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was later sent to Europe as commander of a bomber squadron. He attained the rank of brigadier general and was honored with several military service recognition awards, including the Air Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1985, he was awarded the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"The Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana County is a community landmark with national interest attracting over 6,000 visitors last year alone," Struzzi added. "This year, the museum will be hosting a special first look at the upcoming moving, 'Jimmy,' directed by Aaron Burns with Executive Producer Kelly Stewart Harcourt on May 20. The museum will also be debuting a new rotating exhibit, 'The Making of Jimmy.' Marking May 20 as Jimmy Stewart Day adds an additional spotlight on our local hero."
