Election Yard Sign Regulations

As we enter the election season, we would like to remind residents of the temporary signage regulations for the City. During the 30 days prior to an election, and ending 7 days after the event, the maximum number of yard signs permitted is 6. An additional yard sign is granted to those properties facing more than one street, Lake Monona, or the Yahara River. Each yard sign may be up to 6 square feet in size, with a maximum cumulative sign area of 36 square feet. Yard signs must also adhere to a maximum height of 4 feet.

It's important to note that yard signs must be located on-premises. If placed on the City right-of-way adjacent to the property's street frontage, signs must not obstruct traffic visibility and should be positioned a minimum of 2 feet from the back of the sidewalk, or 2 feet from the back of the curb when there is no sidewalk. The maximum limit of 6 signs outlined above remains in effect until 7 days after the November 5th election.

It's important to clarify that the City does not regulate the content of signs. Election signs, as long as they adhere to the specified size, location, and number criteria listed above, may be displayed at any time.
