MEDIA ADVISORY: Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh joins other officials to stress the importance of work zone safety

Wednesday, April 22, 2026, is National Go Orange Day, part of National Work Zone Awareness week. State Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh will join law enforcement, contractors, and state and federal highways officials at 10 a.m. at the State Capitol to stress the importance of work zone safety and paying attention in work zones.

WHO: Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh, Federal Highways Administration representative John Rogers, Jason Pizatella of the Contractors Association of West Virginia, Sgt. Eric McClung of the West Virginia State Police, and Governor's Highway Safety Program representative Amy Boggs.

WHAT: Commemoration of National Go Orange Day and messages about the importance of work zone safety.

WHERE: North side West Virginia Capitol building, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston.

There were 800 crashes in West Virginia highway work zones in 2025, leading to 301 injuries and five deaths. The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) urges drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones, so they, their family members, contract road workers, and WVDOT road crews can go home safely at the end of the day. Safe actions save lives.
